Online hydrology monitoring is required by the European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD) Article 6(1)(d), which requires Member States to monitor “the ecological status of surface water bodies” on an annual basis. This can be achieved through a variety of techniques including flow monitoring, flow gauging, or numerical simulation using 3D hydrodynamic models.
